Things To Look Out For in Dorchester in 2012

Brewery Square

Happy New Year everyone! 2012 is shaping up to be a very exciting year for us here in Dorchester. Here are a few things we’ve got to look forward to in the coming weeks and months…

2012 Olympics

The wait is almost over – this summer the world’s biggest sporting event comes to Britain, and most excitingly the sailing events will be taking place right on our doorstep over in Weymouth. We’re ideally placed to benefit from tourists and visitors flocking down to see the competitors battle it out in Weymouth Bay, so expect it to get very busy for a couple of weeks in July and August!

We’re lucky enough to be on the route of the Olympic torch relay, so we’re hoping for some fantastic celebrations in town to mark the occasion. The big picnic gathering at Maumbury Rings for the Royal wedding was a highlight of 2011, so hopefully we can repeat that kind of success come the summer.

Brewery Square

Phase 2 of the Brewery Square development is scheduled to open in October – bringing popular restaurants like Pizza Express and exciting new shops like Hobbs.

It’s difficult to overstate how important this development is to the town. At a time when the whole country is mired in economic gloom and we’re seeing UK businesses boarding up left, right and centre, it’s fantastic that a previously derelict and abandoned site in Dorchester is undergoing an extraordinary regeneration, attracting brand new big name businesses to the town and providing luxury homes for hundreds of new residents.

DBID Projects

The parking ambassadors initiative we rolled out in the run-up to Christmas was a big success, and we’d love to see that return at some point in 2012. Meanwhile, the much-admired Dorchester free parking scheme has been renewed and will run until early next year. We’ve also got a number of other exciting ideas in the pipeline, so stay tuned!

Other Events

Dorset County Museum’s incredible Pharaoh: King of Egypt Exhibition is here until 22nd January, when the artefacts will all be boxed up and moved on to their next stop on their tour of the UK. If you haven’t been already, it’s an amazingly rare chance to see a fascinating collection of ancient artwork and objects outside of their home in London’s British Museum.

As always, Dorchester Arts have a packed line-up for Spring 2012, starting with a performance of Francis Hodgson Burnett’s endearing classic Angel Exit on 5th, 6th and 7th January. Visit the Dorchester Arts website to see their full Spring 2012 Brochure.

An Open Letter to Mary Portas

Monday, December 19th, 2011
Tags: , , ,

Dear Mary,

As someone who has enjoyed your program output for many years (they would all make excellent training films too) I wanted to add my thanks and congrats on behalf of all High Street retailers for what you have done/are doing to champion the cause of the high street business. I tweeted you on this today but I expect you get too many to reply?

As the project director of Dorchester’s BID and already a convert to your way of thinking, your timely report HAS to be listened to and I hope acted on.

I would love to share some of the ideas with you that we have implemented here in Dorchester since 2008 when DBID first started. We are a very small BID (levy take is £100k p.a total) so I have to make the cash go a long way to make sure it helps businesses as much as possible. For just over a year (after several years of talks) we managed to get WDDC (west Dorset District Council) to agree to bringing back FREE parking after 6.00pm and all day Sundays in all car parks in town. A few months later we managed to get Dorset County council to follow with the on street parking meters too!

The next idea was a parking voucher scheme which meant you could effectively park all day for free in Dorchester as long as you kept spending money in the shops (£1 gets you 2hrs, spend £10+ in supporting shops and you get your £1 off your purchases at the till).

As the second phase to this highly successful project DBID has just secured agreement for matched funding from WDDC which allows DBID to give the businesses £4 back for every £10 they pay out to customers (equates to a minimum of £100 t/o for that shop @£10 min spend to qualify). This ‘sharing of the cost’ has made it viable for some more of the smaller shops to join the scheme too. The nice thing about this idea is that the independents can get a very large chunk of their BID levy back as a direct result of the project so helping to make the BID cost neutral for them (which is another one of our aims).

Finally, our last pilot project for the year is ‘Dorchester Ambassadors’ – A small but locally knowledgeable team of people that meet and greet visitors when they arrive in a car park in town, get them parked briskly (or direct them to the nearest car park with spaces). Once parked they then hit their other role of town guide and can offer directions to the place/s they want to find or the shop they need.

This is where I need your help: We are getting fabulous feedback from both the public and the shops with this idea but I really need your help to make happen the next logical stage – I want to make this a permanent feature of town for Wednesdays (market day) and all school holidays and to afford to do this we need to spread the cost over all 3 LA’s and DBID. With your assistance (it would make a great program too?) I am convinced we can get the councils to play ball and not only share the cost but share the glory of the positive news story and help local high street shops survive the recession!!

Please can you call me for a quick chat if you like the idea in principle and would like to know more.

Kind Regards,

Phil

DBID…Working for Business in Dorchester”

PS Here is the latest email feedback from a happy shopper this morning

Dear Phil

Rarely am I moved to find time to feed back!!  Poor really given my job, but for the first time in at least 1o years  ventured to Dorchester from Burton Bradstock to see if I could finish my Christmas shopping in the town.  My teenage daughter decided to drive to Exeter. I arrived in the Gould’s car park and was greeted by an ambassador, simply wonderful a complete contrast to Bridport where generally you cannot find a space and when you do there is usually a panic to get to it!

I great scheme and I thoroughly enjoyed my shopping experience.

Congratulations to your team

Elise

Retail Expert Mary Portas

Retail Expert Mary Portas

Many of you will have already seen the report from Mary Portas on the nation’s high streets, and read her 28 recommendations for how to keep them alive in the years to come. The report comes with the shocking revelation that the number of town centre stores in the UK has decreased by 25,000 in the last 11 years, and almost one in six outlets are currently standing empty.

It’s a fascinating report, but what struck us was how many of her recommendations are already being implemented here in Dorchester! Here’s a couple of points that we thought would be worth highlighting…

Super BIDs

2. Empower successful Business Improvement Districts to take on more responsibilities and powers and become “Super-BIDs”

One of the key changes Portas wants to see is the creation of so-called “Super-BIDs”. She describes the BID model in glowing terms, and in her view its strength lies in its ability to engender a feeling of trust among retailers to promote investment in areas.

Portas would like to see the BIDs become more sophisticated and take on a broader role, working to  develop a dynamic strategic vision for our towns. This is all music to our ears, as we’d love to build on the successes we’ve had in Dorchester in the last couple of years.

Free Parking Schemes

9. Local areas should implement free controlled parking schemes that work for their town centres and we should have a new parking league table

Sound familiar? Mary Portas’ ninth recommendation is for more towns to implement free parking schemes, similar to the one we’ve been running in Dorchester for the last year. It’s been an extremely well received and successful project for us, and we’re tremendously gratified to see this being acknowledged as the way forward by influencial figures like Mary. She is the queen of shops after all!

Dorchester Ambassadors

Don’t forget the Dorchester ambassadors will be in the town’s car parks this weekend, so if you need any advice or help with finding shops or attractions, they will be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

Volunteers Wanted as Dorchester Ambassadors!

Friday, November 11th, 2011

Dorchester Ambassadors

The Dorchester BID is always trying to find new ways to boost trade and tourism in Dorchester, ensuring it stays a vibrant, eclectic and fun place to visit and live in. Our newest scheme, which we hope to introduce in the two weeks before Christmas, we feel could really enhance the experience of visitors to the town.

The idea is for a team of ‘Town Ambassadors’ (probably about 4) to help promote the town by encouraging people to explore and discover just how much Dorchester has to offer. These volunteers would be stationed in the town’s car parks to act as meeters and greeters – welcoming visitors to the town, showing them where to park, and then offering them suggestions for where to shop, which Dorchester attractions to visit and where to eat and drink.

Our plan is for one ambassador to be present in the Charles Street car park, and another to have a roaming role between the other town car parks. We would ideally be looking for two people available from Monday to Saturday to do two hours in the morning between 9.30am-11.30am, and two more to cover between 11.30am-1.30am. This could of course be different people every day, depending on the level of volunteer interest.

Skills/Qualifications required: Outgoing personality, a passion for Dorchester, pride in our county town and of course good local knowledge!

The Dorchester BID will be organising this initiative and although we are asking for volunteers, there is some funding to allow us to reimburse the Ambassadors for time spent on the pilot project.

If it is a success DBID will hope to encourage the local authorities to consider joining in with financial support to make the Dorchester Ambassadors a more permanent feature in town during peak periods (Wednesdays, Easter, Summer holidays and during the Olympics for example).

Anyone interested in being considered as a Dorchester Ambassador please contact the DBID by post to 49 High West Street, or by email to philg@dorchesterdorset.co.uk

Social Media Workshop

Tuesday's social media workshop

We had another great Dorchester social media workshop this week at the Wessex Hotel. It was brilliant to see such a good turnout for our second level two session, and I think everyone took a lot from it, and left with plenty to think about regarding Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and more.

Thanks to all who came, and also to Key Multimedia for providing the session.

We’re now starting to see a real community of Dorchester tweeters emerging, as lots of our local businesses have taken to it really well. It’s a fabulous opportunity to help each other out and promote each other- if you see a tweet your followers might be interested in, retweet it and help spread the word!

The list of attendees (and twitter names) of this week’s participants are below, and we’ve also put together an @DorchesterBID Twitter list of local business users: http://twitter.com/#!/DorchesterBID/dorchester-businesses.

Feel free to follow the list above and use it to build up your own contacts. It’ll be a growing list, and we’ll be adding new Dorchester tweeters when we come across them. If there’s anybody we have left out so far, just tweet us and we’ll add you to the list!

Dorchester BID Latest News

Thursday, October 13th, 2011
Tags: , , , , ,

Here is a round-up of all the latest news from Dorchester BID…

  • Aerial DorchesterNew improved parking voucher scheme – All tickets dated 1st Oct onwards will have a redeemable value. DBID has secured matched funding from WDDC to allow a 2 for 5 buyback (£2 to you for every 5 you collect). See below for full details.
  • Cardboard & Paper recycling – Some businesses using WDDC’s paper and cardboard recycling scheme have not yet claimed their BID subsidy for 2009/10. It’s worth 30% of your spend. If this is you, contact us asap for details. The scheme has been extended into 2010/11 and increased to a 50% subsidy! Another way to help you get your BID levy back.
  • Social media workshop level II – Following on from the highly successful level I we are now organising a ‘hands on’ workshop on the 1st November. Details below. I have had a couple of requests to run these after work if I get enough interest we can do this, please contact me if you are interested in either.
  • Business Connections event – ‘Meet the DBID’ This Friday, at the Dorford centre between 11.00-5.00pm. If you can escape for 20 minutes anytime please come and meet some of your fellow Dorchester businesses who are exhibiting. It’s also a chance to meet the DBID board members, ask any questions you may have or just gain a better understanding of the BID and what are aiming to achieve for the town.
  • Christmas Cracker magazine and Wessex FM advertising subsidies – We will offer support again this year if you would like to join in please contact us.

Parking voucher scheme – How it works

Parking SchemeThank you to all those shops and businesses that have been supporting the current scheme that has proved to be popular with the public. As a result of this success, DBID has secured matched funding from WDDC which will allow us to make the following change to support those on the scheme.

All tickets (WDDC car parks in town & DCC on-street parking) dated 1st October onwards, now have a value for redemption. For every 5 you collect, we will give you £2 back. To allow as many businesses as possible to benefit from this support, there is a maximum claim of £200p.a per business. We hope to be able to maintain this scheme for the remaining duration of the DBID term that ends in early 2013.

To remind you, a shopper has to spend a minimum of £10 in your business before they qualify for getting their parking £1 off their purchase (some parkers may have a 60p ticket so get just 60p, please make sure your staff know this). As the on-street tickets are a single part ticket, they need to be used on a subsequent trip to town (or later in the day) so please be flexible on the date on the ticket as long as it’s after 1st October.

I am about to do a re-launch of the scheme to broadcast this unique facility offered by Dorchester to its shoppers/visitors so it is important that I have a correct and up to date list of participating businesses. If you would now like to join the scheme please let me know by emailing philg@dorchesterdorset.co.uk.

If your name currently appears on those participating list on our website and you do not support the scheme again please let me know urgently before I get the next leaflets printed for distribution.

Social Media Workshop – LEVEL II

social media seminarThis ½ day workshop follows on from the original workshop that DBID ran last week and a few weeks ago. It is aimed at giving attendees a good foundation in the world of social media. It provides an equal balance of interactive presentation, discussion and individual work on the applications that businesses and companies should be starting to use in their marketing mix.

Basic principles of Social Media:

Our first session will tackle the key concepts of Social Media and look at how it differs from other forms of marketing (both online and offline). We will also look at Search Engine Optimisation and discover why the principles of SEO are important for social media marketing.

We take time out for you to look at some of the tools that will help you discover the keywords that will really work for your business. With a clear understanding of what keywords you want to target we explore how you can adopt these principles across all their Web 2.0 applications: from blogs and YouTube to Facebook and Twitter.

Twitter:

This session really does lift the lid on Twitter and looks at the many ways companies can use it: engagement, PR, brand building, selling, customer care, sales promotion and much more. We look at how organisations can, at 140 characters a tweet, turn this into a powerful marketing tool. Using a mix of case studies and real-time examples we will explore how your company can maximise the use of Twitter. We also look at third party applications and mobile devices, to see how you can use it for updating, tracking, monitoring, engaging, broadcasting and looking after. Who to follow, what to tweet and more….

Business Blogging:

Blogging has undoubtedly been the driving force behind social media adoption. It allows individuals and businesses, the ability to talk about their organisations, link to similar organisations and invite comments from their community. It is also a force to be reckoned with when it comes to gaining top position on Google! We will explore: Why would an organisation blog? What would they blog about? How do they create fresh, relevant content? How can organisations hook up blogs to other social media channels?

We take a “behind the scenes” look at WordPress – one of the popular blogging platforms and see how some simple tips can make your blogging much more effective.

Facebook:

Profiles, friends, groups, networks, social ads, pages, polls… What does it all mean and how can you leverage the power of Facebook to improve your marketing efforts? How are the multinationals using Facebook and are there important lessons for smaller businesses.

We look at the steps to building a Facebook Business Page and different strategies for engaging with your audience.

Location and Time:

Wessex Royal Hotel, 9.30am, Tue 1st November. Includes lunch with Q&A’s (bring your laptop)

Cost:

£39 for DBID members

connecting Dorchester businesses

We all know that good business involves cooperation and networking, to enable you to get the help, advice and support you need to keep your business moving in the right direction. Dorchester BID is always looking for ways to help bring Dorchester businesses together in an interesting and useful way, and next month we will be supporting an event that aims to do exactly that.

Business Connections Dorset is a company set up to promote interaction and trade between businesses, and is run by Simon Marfell, who has already successfully put on similar initiatives in Weymouth in the past. In the coming months he will be organising seminars, exhibitions and other marketing events throughout Dorset.

Dorchester Business Exhibition

The first Business Connections exhibition will be held here in Dorchester, and the focus will be specifically on helping Dorchester businesses. The location will be the Dorford Centre by the Top o’ Town roundabout and the date will be October 14th.

To help you out with the costs, DBID will be offering a 25% subsidy to any BID members who sign up for the exhibition. We’ll be there too, so if you have anything BID-related on your mind you’d like to discuss with us, the exhibition will be a good informal opportunity to do so.

Wessex FM, the View From newspapers and the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce are all on board as well as ourselves, so we’re confident the exhibition will be a great success and a fantastic showcase for Dorchester business.

Entry is free for all visitors who aren’t exhibiting, and the event will run from 11am until 5pm. If you would like to exhibit, contact Simon Marfell at info@bcdorset.co.uk for details. Stands are allocated on a first come first served basis, so book your place now to avoid missing out.
