This highly important and spectacular event is back in Dorchester this summer, and it’s one you won’t want to miss if you’re looking for something truly memorable. Dorchester plays host once again to the annual Armour & Embarkation showcase, where you’ll witness many of the vehicles used in World War Two as part of a powerful commemoration on the lead-up to the anniversary of the D-Day landings.

Dorset has a deep and proud connection to that pivotal moment in history. It was from these very shores that troops, tanks, and convoys gathered and departed in preparation for one of the most significant military operations the world has ever seen. On Saturday 20th June from 11am until 5:30pm, Brewery Square will be transforming into a living memorial to commemorate and remember the massive build-up of military hardware in Dorset that paved the way for the D-Day landings. Working in collaboration with the Armour & Embarkation team and The Military Vehicle Trust, this is a free, family-friendly day that promises to be a true sensory experience. The sights, sounds, and even the smells of history roll right through the heart of our town.

Here’s a full rundown of what to expect on the day:

The Early Muster: 11am to 5pm

From the moment the day kicks off, head to Brewery Square to get up close and personal with the machines that defined an era. The Military Vehicle Trust will be on-site with a collection of meticulously restored military vehicles. This is a truly rare and very special opportunity to appreciate these legendary vehicles face-to-face. Get up close, talk to the experts and get to know the incredible titans of history running.

Peg Doll & Model Plane Making: 11am to 5pm

A wonderful hands-on activity running throughout the day for the little ones. Children can get creative and craft their very own peg dolls and model planes to take home as a keepsake.

The Decadettes: 1:30pm to 2:30pm

Close your eyes, soak up the atmosphere, and let the music transport you back in time. Set the scene perfectly with a live performance from The Decadettes, delivering the authentic sounds of the 1940s right in the heart of the Square.

The Armour & Embarkation Convoy: 3:30pm to 5:30pm

Save your spot for this one, it’s the moment the ground starts to shake. From 3:30pm, the full Armour & Embarkation convoy makes its grand arrival into Dorchester. Watch as a spectacular line-up of heavy tanks rolls in along Weymouth Avenue, lighter military vehicles take over the Square itself, and a thundering fleet of vintage motorbikes fills Dray Horse Yard with the roar of history. It’s a goosebumps moment, every single time.
