Planning Permission Granted for New Live Music & Community Venue in Dorchester

Dorchester, Dorset – Planning permission has been granted for the transformation of a long-vacant building on the Marabout Industrial Estate into a new live music, events and community venue, led by the team behind Copper Street Brewery.

The approval, granted by Dorset Council, allows for the conversion of a former military hospital building that has stood empty for more than 25 years. The project will bring the site back into active use as a vibrant destination for live music, food, drink and community activity.

What’s planned

The new venue will feature:

  • Two performance spaces across separate levels, including a dedicated stage for live music
  • A micro-brewery, café and bar, operated by Copper Street Brewery
  • Flexible spaces for community events, workshops and activities such as yoga, crafts and private functions
  • Supporting facilities including reception and ticketing areas
  • The venue is expected to create up to 20 new local jobs once fully operational.

A boost for Dorchester’s cultural scene

The development has been welcomed locally as a significant addition to Dorchester’s cultural and night-time economy, providing a much-needed live music and events space while preserving the character of an existing building.

External changes to the building will be minimal, with most work taking place internally, including soundproofing and accessibility improvements, ensuring the venue is fit for purpose while respecting the surrounding area.

Phil Gordon said,…

“New attractions like this are vital for Dorchester’s tourism offer. A live music and events venue adds depth to the visitor experience and helps support the town’s evening economy, benefitting local businesses, accommodation providers and the wider hospitality sector.”
