Dorchester Art Studio Invites Community to Create a “Garden of Expression” for World Art Day

Dorchester residents – and visitors from near and far – are being invited to take part in a unique community art experience this World Art Day, as Creative Image Studio opens its doors – and its canvas – to the public.

From 15 April, the studio in Antelope Walk will host an interactive artwork titled “A Garden of Expression: Cultivating Community Through Art.” The project encourages passers-by to contribute to a large-scale painting, helping to build a collective piece that celebrates creativity, connection, and shared expression.

The artwork features a striking silhouette, with flowing hair designed to be filled with floral elements. Members of the public are invited to add a small flower, leaf, or decorative detail – gradually transforming the piece into a vibrant representation of the community.

The installation will be set up outside the studio throughout the day, weather permitting, allowing anyone walking through the town centre to take part. In the event of poor weather, the activity will continue inside the studio so that no one misses the opportunity to contribute.

The project will begin on 15 April and continue over the following days until the artwork is beautifully full, giving as many people as possible the chance to take part.

Creative Image Studio, which runs regular beginner-friendly art classes in Dorchester, has built a strong reputation for making art accessible to everyone, regardless of experience. The World Art Day project reflects the studio’s core ethos: that creativity can bring people together, support wellbeing, and foster a sense of belonging.

Studio owner Tyra Goosen said:

“Art has an incredible way of connecting people. This project is about giving everyone – whether they’ve painted before or not – the chance to be part of something meaningful. Each small contribution becomes part of a larger story.”

Once completed, the artwork will remain as a lasting piece representing the Dorchester community. Prints of the finished work will also be made available, allowing participants to take home a part of the shared experience.

As well as celebrating creativity and community, the project also holds personal meaning for the studio’s owner, Tyra Goosen, who is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer. The artwork serves as a way to recognise and thank the studio’s community for their ongoing support during this time, highlighting the powerful role that creativity and connection can play in bringing people together.

The event is free to take part in, and no booking is required.
