D-Day Military Convoy

On June 22nd, our county town of Dorchester will witness a spectacular historic event, as over one hundred military vehicles from World War II make their way through the streets! This military convoy is more than just a parade of vintage machines, but also a living tribute to the brave soldiers, men and women, who fought and sacrificed during the D-Day landings 80 years ago.

This event promises to be a poignant and memorable experience and provides the perfect day out for families in Dorchester!

 

What is D-Day?

D-Day took place on June 6th, 1944, and marked a turning point in World War II. Day-Day, otherwise known as the ’Normandy landings’, began the liberation of German-occupied France and laid the foundations of Allied victory on the Western Front! Thes D-Day convoy in Dorchester commemorates the 80th anniversary of D-Day and the success of the allies, bringing history to life in a vivid and engaging manner!

Military Convoy in Dorchester

The military convoy in Dorchester will feature an impressive array of over one hundred military vehicles, many of which are originals that have been meticulously restored to their wartime glory. These vehicles include jeeps, trucks and transport vehicles, ambulances and support vehicles as well as tanks and other armoured vehicles – including several Sherman tanks, half tracks and some other very, very rare vehicles!

In addition to the visual spectacle, the convoy aims to educate and engage the community, especially younger generations to allow them to understand the importance of freedom and prevention of war. Schools in the area have been invited to participate, with special jeep trips in planning days before the event.

Schedule and Route

The convoy will begin its journey early in the morning, starting from Broadmayne and other local attractions before making its way through Dorchester at around 15:30. At around three spectators in Dorchester will be able to get up close to the vehicles, talk to the reenactors and history enthusiasts, to learn more about the history behind the vehicles!

How to Participate

The D-Day convoy through Dorchester is a free event, open to all – however, we would highly encourage spectators to dress up in 1940s costumes / regalia. All children dressed-up will be given flags and other goodies on the day!
