Hub Box Opens In Brewery Square, Dorchester

Thursday, November 3rd, 2022

A new burger restaurant has recently opened its doors in Dorchester. Hub Box specialises in gourmet burgers, hand-cut fries, cocktails and craft beer.

The new 120-seat restaurant is located in Brewery Square, Dorchester – a first in Dorset for the growing restaurant chain. It’s the latest eatery to add to the fantastic selection of restaurants in Dorchester. Have you tried Hub Box Dorchester yet?

During the launch opening week we caught up with Nicole Murray, Marketing Manager from the Hub Box team to find out more …

Can you provide some background information and history of Hub Box?

“Coming a long way from its beginnings as Hub on St. Ives harbour in 2003, Hub Box, first appeared in Truro in 2012. Initially set up in a shipping container to create a fun vibrant place for locals and tourists to enjoy (hence the Box element). Hub Box now has 12 restaurants across the UK, with further expansion plans for 2023.”

Are the ingredients you use locally sourced?

“We believe food should taste incredible, with seasonality and local produce as top priorities. Local suppliers include grass-fed moorland beef from Philip Warren, free range chicken from Castlemead Poultry, artisan hot dogs from Rare and Pasture in Devon, made from free range, rare breed pork. Baker Tom’s Cornish clotted cream buns and potatoes from Colwith Farm for their hand cut fries.

Our packed menu of signature burgers includes grass-fed, outdoor reared beef patties like the Hub Burger which made it to the finals of the 2021 National Burger Awards, alongside higher welfare, free-range chicken burgers like the Dirty Disco burger. Choose from a firm favourite the Halloumi Fries; and a whole menu of hand-cut, skin on, dirty fries – Mother Clucker Fries – we’re looking at you!”

What are the most popular items/highlights on the menu?

“Definitely the Big Kahuna: Double patty, BBQ pulled pork, burger cheese, smoky BBQ sauce, mayo, lettuce piled high in a Baker Toms clotted cream bun, crowned with our onion rings.

Our selection of dirty fries are also very popular – all made with potatoes grown in Cornwall and hand-cut in house.”

What is the perfect cocktail to enjoy after a meal?

“I’d say if you’re looking for a dessert type cocktail, the Hub Colada is a winner: Koko Kanu coconut rum, Dead Man’s Fingers pineapple rum, cream of coconut, mango, pineapple.

Or our Banana Mule: ‘Discarded’ banana peel rum, Fever Tree ginger ale, lime, soda.

We do offer the Affogato which isn’t a cocktail, but a great dessert. Make it dirty with liqueur – even better!”

What made you choose Dorchester Brewery Square as a place to open?

“The Founder, and CEO of Hub Box, Richard Boon summed this up when we announced we were opening soon. He described Brewery Square as a thriving destination in Dorset’s county town which lends itself perfectly as a location for our restaurant. As a proud South West business, we believe in choosing areas that celebrate local culture and drive awareness of independent businesses.

“Our Dorchester restaurant signifies a milestone in our journey as we venture into a new county, having brought job opportunities to the area and growing our passionate team culture. It’s a truly exciting time for Hub Box and we’re already enjoying welcoming the Dorset community through our doors since we opened.”

What will make Hub Box different to other restaurants in Dorchester?

“The company champions seasonality and provenance, sourcing ingredients across the region including grass-fed moorland beef from Launceston-based butcher Philip Warren, and free-range chicken from Castlemead Poultry in Radstock. Staple dishes at Dorchester Hub Box will include its award-winning Big Kahuna Burger, buttermilk-fried chicken Dirty Disco burger. As well as delicious hot dogs from Rare and Pasture; an artisan, organic charcuterie and smokery. Plus a range of plant-based and meat-free alternatives.

With indoor and outdoor dining spaces and a dedicated bar area, the design and décor will emulate Hub Box’s signature unique style. The design will celebrate South West coastal and surf culture with a modern and spirited feel, while also giving a nod to the site’s rich 19th-century architecture and heritage as a former brewery. In keeping with Brewery Square’s regular showcase of Dorset talent, the restaurant décor will feature the work of local suppliers, as well as focus on sustainability with reclaimed materials.”

Do you have any exciting plans for the future?

We plan to open further sites in 2023 – watch this space!

Can you describe the business in 3 words?

Burgers, beers and good times! (okay, not quite 3 words… but close!!)
