Virtual Dorchester – An online celebration

With social distancing restrictions at public events, event organisers have therefore had to make this year’s Heritage Day a mainly online celebration. However, several outdoor guided tours will also take place on the day. Consisting of virtual tours, information displays and images of some of Dorchester’s heritage destinations, there will certainly be plenty to watch online. The day kicks off with a live stream via local radio station KeeP 106. Across a series of different focus areas, the story of who built Dorchester will be revealed. Viewers can enjoy the following:

A selection of FREE guided walking tours are available on Heritage Open Day, Sunday 13th September. The tours are divided into four different parts of Dorchester, based around the old Roman town walls and the town walks that were laid out in the 18th century.

Each route will begin at the Town Pump and explore Dorchester’s heritage, hidden nature and points of interest. As well as live performances and readings by the New Hardy Players of the works of local literary greats Thomas Hardy and William Barnes.

The times for the morning and afternoon tours are 11am and 2pm, with pre-booking essential and there are a limited number of places available. Each tour lasts around 45 minutes.
