The Best Markets in Dorchester
Wednesday, June 25th, 2025Dorchester is more than just a historic county town; it’s a thriving market hub with roots stretching back to medieval England. Dorchester was granted its first market charter in 1305, and has long been a place where local farmers, traders, and artisans gathered to exchange goods, share news, and support the rural economy.
Today, that market tradition is still alive and well. Whether you’re wandering through the stalls during the weekly Wednesday market or browsing local produce at the regular farmers’ markets, Dorchester continues to offer a vibrant shopping experience steeped in community spirit and history.
Dorchester plays host to several markets throughout the year, so there are plenty of opportunities for some unique shopping experiences in the heart of Dorset County. Here are some of the best markets in Dorchester that take place year-round, with some seasonal treats too.
Dorchester Market
One of Dorchester’s biggest markets, the Dorchester Market, can see around 200 stores come together to host a weekly market selling a wide range of goods from around the Dorchester area.
The Dorchester market is held at Weymouth Avenue, which is located opposite Brewery Square and just a short walk away from Dorchester town centre. The market is open every Wednesday all year round from 6:30am – 2pm.
On Sundays, the market turns into one of Dorset’s largest car boot and table-top style events, where many local sellers come together to share their hidden treasures and some real bargains. Locals recommend visiting early to discover the best finds in the market.

Dorchester’s Historic Cornhill Market
At the top of South Street lies Cornhill Market, a lively and much-loved part of the town’s market scene. Steeped in history, this spot has been a centre for trade since medieval times, its name a nod to the days when grain and corn were bought and sold here by local merchants and farmers.

Visitors can browse everything from fresh local produce and baked goods to handmade crafts, plants, fashion, and gifts – all while soaking up the friendly atmosphere that makes this part of Dorchester so special.
Are you looking for a local place to sell your wares? The Cornhill Market community are always welcoming new sellers to the crew. Pitch sizes start at £20 for a 3×3 meters space, whether you opt for a 6×6 meters or a 9×9 meters pitch, they have special pricing packages available that will suit your needs and budget.
