May is National Walking Month, and Dorchester is marking the occasion in style. The Dorchester Walking Festival is back for 2026, bringing together a fantastic programme of guided walks that celebrate the town’s rich history, stunning natural landscapes, and hidden corners that even many locals have yet to discover.

Running from Saturday 2nd May to Saturday 10th May, this is a brilliant opportunity to get active, connect with the community, and see Dorchester and the surrounding area through fresh eyes.

What is the Dorchester Walking Festival?

Dorchester Walking Festival - Enjoy the outdoors

The Walking Festival is an annual community event that uses National Walking Month as a springboard to get people exploring on foot. Each walk is led by knowledgeable local guides, with routes ranging from scenic countryside trails to fascinating historical tours through the town centre itself.

It’s an event that genuinely has something for everyone. Families, history enthusiasts, nature lovers, and those simply looking to stretch their legs and enjoy the spring air will all find something to suit them across the week-long programme.

Importantly, the festival also gives back. Walk leaders choose local charities to receive proceeds from each event, and the results speak for themselves. In previous years, the Walking Festival has supported no fewer than 15 local charities.

What’s on at The Dorchester Walking Festival?

The programme this year is packed with variety. Here’s a flavour of what to expect across the week.

For those who love a scenic route, Walk by Train: Maiden Newton to Dorchester and Moreton to Maumbury Rings offer a wonderful way to arrive on foot and take in the Dorset countryside along the way. Walk on the Wildside and the Chesil and Portland Marine Walk are equally spectacular for those who enjoy the great outdoors.

History lovers are particularly well catered for. A Walk Through 17th Century Dorchester, In the Footsteps of Thomas Hardy’s Childhood, and The Hanging Judge: Baron Jeffreys each bring a different chapter of Dorchester’s past to life in an engaging and accessible way. Law and Literature in Dorchester and The Moule Family of Fordington are further highlights for those who enjoy learning as they walk.

For something a little more unexpected, A Folk Song Walk through Dorchester and Stories of Our Non-Native Trees in Borough Gardens offer a genuinely unique way to experience the town and its green spaces.
