D-Day Military Convoy Comes to Dorchester

Friday, August 2nd, 2024 D-Day Convoy B-8

The 22nd June was not your typical Saturday in Dorchester. We got the weather, a glorious sunny afternoon. And just after 2pm the crowds began gathering to celebrate and commemorate Armed Forces and Veterans during the D-Day Military Convoy, which is said to be the biggest military convoy in Dorset since World War II!

The streets were alive with eager spectators, and the roads were packed with an impressive array of wartime vehicles. The excitement in the air was lively as these historical vehicles journeyed from Broadmayne to Brewery Square, before heading back to Broadmayne and finally making their way to Weymouth to continue the festivities the following day. The town centre of Dorchester was filled with the roaring sounds of tanks, armoured vehicles and motorbikes, adding to the nostalgic atmosphere.

Rumoured to be the last time the event would take place, this year’s D-Day convoy featured over 100 wartime vehicles, including the iconic tank from the 2014 film “Fury”. The convoy showcased historic vehicle, including jeeps, motorbikes, large trucks, ambulances, Sherman tanks and even some rare motors, each vehicle telling a story of bravery and history. Many of these military vehicles that took part were originals, meticulously restored to their former wartime glory.

Dorchester locals turned out in force and Weymouth Avenue was lined five or six people deep as the crowds of spectators came together to catch a glimpse of the impressive show. Many of the drivers and passengers were dressed in wartime outfits, creating a real feeling of stepping back in time to 1944.

Once the procession had come to a stop outside Brewery Square there was an opportunity for the crowds to wander in amongst the tanks and get up close to each vehicle. Many of the owners and enthusiasts were on hand to tell everyone about the stories behind the vehicles. It was inspiring to see many young people getting involved, as they were eager to learn more about our important history and understand the significance of freedom and the prevention of war.

The History of D-Day in Dorset

D-Day holds special significance for Dorset, as the county played a role in preparing for the invasion of Europe. Soldiers from Britain, America, Canada and France were stationed throughout Dorset which turned many areas into militarised zones. The coastline served as a stage for the invasion, while the fleet was assembled in the nearby waters.

During the week running up to D-Day, large numbers of transport passed throughout the day and night on their way to the coast. On the night before, the air became filled with planes passing over the county in preparation for the D-Day landings.

The D-Day Armour and Embarkation Convoy at Brewery Square in Dorchester serves as a salute to our forefathers, honouring their bravery and sacrifices. It also reminds us of the significant events that took place in Dorchester 78 years ago, during the build-up to D-Day in June 1944.

We must continue to commemorate this day to educate others and share the stories of our past, particularly with younger generations. This event plays a vital role in both education and the remembrance of bravery and sacrifice.
