History of Napper’s Court in Dorchester

Sunday, May 10th, 2026

Tucked away in a tranquil corner just off Dorchester’s main high street, Napper’s Mite is one of those charming local treasures that’s easy to miss if you don’t know where to look. Steeped in more than four centuries of history and now home to a wonderful mix of independent businesses, Napper’s Mite is a true gem of the town centre. Here’s a look at how it came to be, and who you’ll find behind its doors today.

Nappers Mite

A piece of Dorchester’s history

The story of Napper’s Mite begins in 1613, when the Great Fire of Dorchester swept through the town and destroyed around 300 houses. In the aftermath, Sir Robert Napier of Middlemarsh was appointed to build a house for “ten aged men”. A place of shelter and care for those who had lost everything.

Construction began in 1615 and was completed by Sir Robert’s grandson in 1616. The building was then set aside as almshouses, offering a home to older men in need. Over the generations, Napper’s Mite was passed down through the Napier family line, eventually coming into the hands of Napier George Sturt, who would go on to become the Third Baron Alington.

For many years and in more recent times, the building was home to a much-loved café, Napper’s Mite Café restaurant. One that sadly closed its doors unexpectedly in December 2016, leaving a gap in the community and a beautiful historic space waiting for its next chapter.

A New Chapter: The Secret Garden Café

The Secret Garden Cafe Dorchester

In 2023, that next chapter finally arrived. The Secret Garden Café, already a firm favourite in Weymouth, where the owners had built up a loyal following after moving on from The Crow’s Nest in Hope Square, opened its second location here in Dorchester, breathing new life into Napper’s Mite and delighting locals in the process.

The vegan-focused café puts nutrition and wholesome ingredients right at the heart of its menu, and it goes out of its way to be inclusive. Around 95% of the menu is available gluten-free, with dedicated preparation methods designed to minimise cross-contamination. There are vegetarian, vegan, and traditional breakfast options too, so there’s genuinely something for everyone.

Even better? It’s dog-friendly. So if you’re in town with your four-legged friend, pop in and enjoy a coffee in the peaceful surroundings of Dorchester’s very own secret garden.
